Enriching Volunteer Opportunities
The benefits of volunteering at Hope hotline include:
- An opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life
- Personalized training with flexible scheduling
- Continuing education by professionals and on-going support from other hotline volunteers
- Being able to work part-time from home or from the Hope hotline office
Training focuses on raising awareness of the issues behind the caller’s words. Issues discussed include drug abuse, family violence, mental illness and suicidal thoughts. Role-playing is an integral part of training and helps volunteers prepare for interacting with callers.
“After the Hope hotline training, I felt confident I could listen and give support to anyone, whatever their concerns.”
- Hotline Volunteer
Volunteers are expected to:
- Participate in a comprehensive training program
- Work one 4-hour shift per week for one year
- Attend monthly peer-support and training meetings
- Participate in monthly phone conferences / support sessions
Hope hotline volunteers should have the emotional maturity needed to respond with flexibility in varying situations. Volunteers must be able to listen and communicate effectively. They should be willing to put aside personal ideas in order to offer support that fits within the caller’s faith.
